Pennsbury High School (PHS) Thespian Troupe 830 recently returned from the Pennsylvania State Thespian Conference (States) with an abundance of accolades, workshop enrichment, and a long list of memory-making moments.

Middle and high school students from across the Keystone State annually converge on Central York High School the first Thursday through Saturday of December to showcase and be adjudicated on select performances. This is also a time to learn new techniques and hone skills at workshops conducted by industry professionals and educators, audition before college recruiters, and seek scholarship awards.

Prior to States, Individual Event (IE) auditions were held and finalists selected to represent the Troupe; however, all students attending States have an opportunity to engage in workshops, visit college booths, and view mainstage performances. In addition, students have an opportunity to vie for or lobby attendees for a position on the State Thespian Student Board; PHS Junior Liam Smith was successful in his bid for re-election for the 2017-2018 year.

IE performers from PHS who scored superior and are now eligible to compete in the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska this June include: Sylvia Fisher, Emily Tazza, Gabriella Macera, Nina Limongelli, Ngakiya Camara, Samantha Belinski and Charlie Santella. Seniors Sylvia Fisher and Victoria “Tori” Vouk were two of only eight students from across Pennsylvania to receive direct State Thespian Conference Scholarships. Tori Vouk received “All Star Cast” honors for her portrayal as Grandma in the One Act Play, “Poor Little Lambs” by Stephen Gregg, also starring Emily Tazza, Trevor Frantz, Baillie Poulton, Liam Smith and Harry Weissberger. In addition, the PHS Stage Crew Team took third place in the State Crew Challenge.

PHS has a long list of notable alumni in the arts and entertainment industry including Richard Kind, Robert Curtis Brown, and Christy Altomare, among many others. Troupe members, supervisors, and volunteers have been working to ensure a continuation of supports and opportunities for future students like the success found at this year’s States through a variety of fundraising initiatives and social media promotional messages. Volunteer work and donations provided for the recent stage floor renovation at PHS West Campus Orange Auditorium and efforts are ongoing to address additional needs.

“We want to help Pennsbury maintain its well-known reputation for excellence in the theatre and arts,” said Deborah Tazza, Co-President of the Pennsbury Drama Parents nonprofit organization.
