A former member of the United States Coast Guard’s volunteer auxiliary unit was sentenced to jail Wednesday for stealing money.
Douglas Charles Miller, 36, of Morrisville, was sentenced to four to 23 months behind bars for misusing $4,000 from the Tullytown-based Coast Guard Auxiliary’s funds. Court documents said the money went to help pay for Miller’s personal expenses.
Miller, a former Falls Township park security officer, withdrew $4,000 from the auxiliary unit’s TD Bank account in late 2013. They money went to his car insurance, car payments and cell phone bill but not the coast guard communication equipment it was intended for, authorities said.
The local flotilla commander became aware of the theft after he saw the bank account was overdrawn by several hundred dollars. Miller, when asked, did not turn over bank records, the official told a detective earlier this year.
When interviewed by an investigator, Miller admitted to the misusing the money and said he planned to refund the account, according to court documents.
A Bucks County detective was alerted to the case by a special agent from the Coast Guard, which is overseen by the Department of Homeland Security.
